2003 SMART Student Outing

Aaron (arrow) is our SMART (Summer Medicine And Research Training) student. He was here in the summer of 2003 to study signal transduction regulated by Ras G-proteins. One of the nice experiments that he did was to find out whether Ras association with different cell compartments may be conserved in yeast. In human cells, Ras proteins can associate with a specific region in the cell membrane called lipid rafts. Thus he worked out a protocol to visualize lipid rafts in yeast using filipin staining (upper left). At the end of his study, we took him to a Houston classic: Thelmas, which is a rusty B-B-Q place in downtown. You can see members of the lab in the picture in the lower right hand corner (clockwise): Aaron, Duyen, Zhe, Laura, and Imelda.
