November – December 2005
D. CRAIG ALLRED, M.D., participated in the 3 rd Breast SPORE Roundtable Meeting in Nashville on November 11-12, 2005 , presenting “Molecular profiling of DCIS.” On November 10, he gave a talk, “Precancer – Breast carcinogenesis and high risk management” in Atlanta for the School of Breast Oncology Meeting (SOBO). Dr. Allred also attended the 2005 Quarterly Pathology/Immunohistochemistry Conference for PhenoPath Laboratories in Seattle on November 16-20. His talk was about “Hormone receptors in breast cancer.” From December 7-11, Dr. Allred attended the 28 th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. He co-moderated the mini-symposium titled: “The Origins of Estrogen Receptor (ER) Status in Breast Cancer.” As an External Advisory Board member of the Siteman Cancer Center , Dr. Allred attended the December 16, 2005 meeting in St. Louis . On December 19, he attended the KOL/NMCR Cell Search System Key Opinion Leader Advisory Board Meeting in Dallas .
POWEL H. BROWN, M.D., Ph.D., attended the 28 th San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium December 7-11, in San Antonio , Texas where he participated in the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation Patient Advocate Program, and presented “Update on breast cancer risk reduction.”
GARY C. CHAMNESS, Ph.D., again served as the Program Coordinator for the Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium December 8-11. This year’s meeting attracted nearly 8000 participants from 86 countries.
JENNY CHANG, M.D., participated in the 28 th San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium December 10-11 in San Antonio , Texas where she co-moderated the session “The Origins of Estrogen Receptor Status in Breast Cancer.”
RICHARD ELLEDGE, M.D., was invited to participate in an AstraZeneca Advisory Board in New York on November 18, 2005 , where his input was solicited for optimizing future therapy with anastrozole and fulvestrant with a particular focus on biomarkers and combination approaches. Dr. Elledge participated on the Program Committee and Abstract Review Committee for the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. On December 6, 2005 , in San Antonio , Texas , Dr. Elledge served on Berlex Pharmaceuticals Advisory Board for ZKPRA-230211 as an advisor on the design of phase II protocols for this progesterone receptor antagonist. For the 7 th straight year, the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation asked Dr. Elledge to serve as a Mentor at their annual meeting Patient Advocate Program in San Antonio on December 10, 2005 . Dr. Elledge was invited to participate in Genentech’s Avastin Regional Academic Breast Cancer Advisory Board on December 11, 2005 in San Antonio , Texas .
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., was the co-moderator for the mini-symposium titled “Homing In On Breast Cancer Metastasis” at the 28 th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., participated in the AACR 2007 Workshop in Cancer Biostatistics - Planning Meeting held in Philadelphia , PA , Nov 6-7. She participated in the NCI's 3 rd Breast SPORE Roundtable Meeting held in Nashville , TN , November 10-12. She participated in the National Breast Cancer Coalition Strategic Consensus Conference held in Philadelphia , PA November 13-15. She led the "Prediction and Prognostic Factors" poster discussion session at the 28 th Annual Breast Cancer Symposium held in San Antonio , TX , December 8-11. She served on the External Advisory Committee at the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, in Coral Gables FL on December 16.
MAMTA KALIDAS, M.D., was invited to speak to The 3 rd Annual Houston Conference for Jewish Women on December 4, 2005, where she presented “BRCA1 and 2” with a Q & A session following.
ADRIAN LEE, Ph.D., was invited to attend the 3 rd Breast SPORE Roundtable Meeting, on behalf of the Organs System Branch of the National Cancer Institute, November 10-12, 2005 in Nashville TN. Dr. Lee was also invited to participate in the Baylor/AstraZeneca Collaboration Meeting, where he presented, “Isolation and characterization of cancer stem cells from breast cancer cell lines” on November 21, 2005 in Boston, MA. Dr. Lee also participated in the 28 th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium as a co-moderator for the mini-symposium entitled “Homing in on Breast Cancer Metastasis” on December 9, 2005 in San Antonio , TX .
MICHAEL LEWIS , Ph.D., was invited to participate in the Banbury Center Conference on Cancer Stem Cells. The conference was held at the Banbury Center , Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory, December 4-7, 2005 . He gave a talk entitled “Hedgehog regulation of mammary epithelial stem cells”. He also attended the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and presented a poster entitled “Cyclopamine can inhibit breast cancer cell growth via hedgehog network antagonism and an independent mechanism”.
STEFFI OESTERREICH, Ph.D., was invited to present, “ The role of scaffold attachment factors in breast cancer“at the NCI Translational Epigenetic Science in Cancer Workshop on November 30 th, 2005 , in Rockville M.D.. Dr. Oesterreich also participated in the COBRA: Consortium on Breast Cancer Pharmacogenomics Meeting, along with her medical fellow Jay Wang who presented “SNPs in the cofactors” on November 16, 2005 in Indianapolis , IN. Dr. Oesterreich was also invited to participate in the 28 th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium as a co-moderator for the mini-symposium entitled “Personalized Medicine – Inherited Polymorphisms in Risk and Treatment of Breast Cancer” on December 11, 2005 , in San Antonio , TX . At the same meeting, Dr. Oesterreich was also selected to participate as a mentor for the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation Advocate Program on December 9, 2005 .
C. KENT OSBORNE, M.D., attended the 3 rd Breast SPORE Roundtable Meeting in Nashville , TN , November 10-12, 2005 , participating as a moderator in the breakout session “Status of Collaborative Trials”. Dr. Osborne was selected to be the recipient of one of six awards from The Jacqueline Seroussi Memorial Foundation for Cancer Research, and attended the awards ceremony in Tel Aviv, Israel, on December 1, 2005, where he presented a brief summary of his work, “Molecular mechanisms of endocrine therapy resistance in breast cancer: New strategies to predict and overcome it”. He also presented “Endocrine therapy: How progesterone receptor and HER2/neu can help in treatment selection at the Clinical Symposium with the Laureates of the Jacqueline Seroussi Memorial Foundation for Cancer Research on December 1. Dr. Osborne continues to serve as co-chairman of the Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, where this year he also moderated the mini-symposium “Nanotechnology: New Strategies for Breast Cancer Imaging and Treatment” and organized and moderated two case discussion sessions. He also participated in the GlaxoSmithKline-sponsored 2 nd Annual ErbB Scientific Panel for Lapatinib Clinical Trials in Breast Cancer in San Antonio TX on December 7, 2005 , presenting “Preclinical trial evaluating lapatinib in a tamoxifen-resistant model”.
RACHEL SCHIFF, Ph.D., was invited to participate in the 3 rd Breast SPORE Roundtable Meeting in Nashville on November 10–12, 2005 . On November 21, Dr. Schiff attended the AstraZeneca/Baylor College of Medicine Collaborations meeting in Waltham , Massachusetts. Her talk was, “Inhibition of ErbB family, Jnk, p38 MAPK, and Src to overcome resistance in breast cancer.” She also was invited to give a talk, on November 27, “Estrogen receptor and Her2 biology in breast cancer: Continuing progress and clinical implication”, at the Department of Oncology in the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center . While in Tel Aviv, she attended the Jacqueline Seroussi 2005 Awards for Cancer Research.
HEIDI L. WEISS, Ph.D., participated as a statistical reviewer at the NCI Clinical Oncology Study Section meeting held in Bethesda M.D. on November 7-9, 2005 .
September – October 2005
D. CRAIG ALLRED, M.D., was invited to present “From Drug Discovery to Targeted Therapy with pharmDxtTM Products,” at the 20th European Congress of Pathology in Paris, September 3–8, 2005. He also gave a presentation “New Insights on the Progression of Human Premalignant Breast Disease to Cancer,” at Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri, October 5–7. On October 16–18, Dr. Allred attended the BCRF Meeting in New York and presented, “Apocrine Metaplasia and the Development of ER-Negative Breast Cancer.” He also attended the Mexico Pathology Society Meeting from October 26–28, in Monterrey. His talk was, “State-of-the-art in the Interpretation of Estrogen Receptors.”
POWEL H. BROWN, M.D., Ph.D., was promoted to Professor in the Department of Medicine. He was an invited speaker to the Challenges and Controversies in Breast Cancer in Seattle WA, where he presented “Update on Breast Cancer Chemoprevention,” October 20, 2005.
ERIC CHANG, M.D., had a graduate student, Joel Otero who won two awards, one for a poster presentation entitled “Int6 and Moe1 interact with Cdc48 to regulate mitotic progression in Schizosaccharomyces pombe” presented at the Smith Breast Center Retreat held at Del Lago, Conroe, TX, and one for his oral presentation during the CMB retreat, "Int6 and Moe1 interact with Cdc48 to regulate mitotic progression and ERAD in Schizosaccharomyces pombe." A postdoctoral fellow, Jane Suo, won third place for her abstract, “Study of a Potential Breast Tumor Suppressor Gene, int6” submitted to the 3rd Annual Cancer Center Symposium at Baylor.
RICHARD ELLEDGE, M.D., was invited to speak to The Woodlands Breast Cancer Support Group on 9/14/05, presenting “Recent Advances in Breast Cancer Therapy” with an extended Q&A session following. The NSABP invited Dr. Elledge to address the Group Meeting in Baltimore M.D. on “An Update on NSABP B-36.” Genentech requested that Dr. Elledge participate in their Herceptin Advisory Board on 10/8/05 in Marina del Rey, CA. The Physician’s Education Resource invited Dr. Elledge to serve as a member of the faculty for Translational Therapies in Breast Cancer held in Dallas, TX on 10/22/05, where he gave a presentation on “Novel Strategies to Inhibit the Estrogen Receptor: Preclinical Models and Clinical Trials.”
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., was elected to the AACR Women in Cancer Research Council and attended the Fall Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, held October 6, 2005. Dr. Fuqua was also invited to serve as a member of the Molecular and Preclinical Endocrinology Subcommittee of the Endocrinology Section of the 2006 AACR Program Committee.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., participated as a reviewer at the Cancer Biomarkers Study Section held in Bethesda, Maryland, October 16-18, 2005.
ADRIAN LEE, Ph.D., presented, “Signaling Pathways Controlling Both Cell Fate Determination and Cancer” at the UK-Texas Bioscience Collaboration at the University of Dundee on September 14, 2005, in Dundee, UK. Dr. Lee also attended the Division of Cancer Biology, NCI Activities to Promote Research Collaborations (APRC) Workshop in Gaithersburg, M.D., giving his talk, “EGF/IGF Cross-talk in Mammary Epithelial Cell Growth, Morphogenesis and Breast Cancer” on October 21, 2005.
STEFFI OESTERREICH, Ph.D., was invited to present, “The Role of SAFB1 in Breast Tumorigenesis“ at the University of California San Francisco Cancer Center in San Francisco, CA, on October 25, 2005.
C. KENT OSBORNE, M.D., was invited to present “Crosstalk Between Estrogen Receptor and Growth Factor Receptor Pathways and Resistance to Endocrine Therapy in Breast Cancer” at Familial Cancer 2005: Research and Practice, the combined meeting of kConFab, Australian Ovarian Cancer Study (AOCS), ACCFS, and Family Cancer Clinics of Australia and New Zealand at Couran Cove Island, Queensland, Australia, on August 30-September 3, 2005. He was invited to the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium to present “Optimizing Endocrine Therapy” in Chicago on October 8, 2005. Dr. Osborne also attended The Breast Cancer Research Foundation Fourth Annual Scientific Conference – Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment and Quality of Life, presenting “Predicting Response to Endocrine Therapy: Are All Endocrine Therapies Alike?” in New York on October 17, 2005

He also attended the 13th SPORE Investigators’ Workshop in Washington DC, July 9-12, 2005, and gave a poster presentation.
POWEL H. BROWN, M.D., Ph.D., was invited to the Targeted Therapies for the Treatment of Breast Cancer Conference in Dana Point CA where he presented “Novel Approaches to Chemoprevention Targets,” July 6 – 9, 2005. Dr. Brown was also invited to present “Novel Strategies for the Prevention of Breast Cancer” at the UT Southwestern Evening of Experts in Dallas, TX, July 21, 2005. He also presented “Targeting Signal Transduction Pathways for the Prevention of Breast Cancer” at the Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute in Kansas City KS on August 30, 2005.
JENNY CHANG, M.D., attended the 13th SPORE Investigators Workshop, Washington DC, July 9-12, 2005, where she presented “Candidate Biomarkers of Response to Preoperative Trials of Trastuzumab and Chemotherapy from Combined Microarray Datasets. She also co-chaired the “Research Paradigms” discussions at the 3rd Gleneagles Conference on Endocrine Therapy for Breast Cancer in Auchterarder, Scotland, July 21 – 24, 2005. On July 28, 2005, Dr. Chang presented “Clinical Care & Research in Minority Women: Experience at Harris County” at the Chinese Community Center in Houston for the Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization.
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., was invited to sit on the panel for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences students at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center on July 14, 2005. Dr. Fuqua was invited to be a presenter at the 4th Annual Future of Breast Cancer: Individualizing Breast Cancer Treatment conference in Bermuda, July 21-24, 2005. The title of her presentation was “Predictors of Response and Resistance to Endocrine Therapy”. At the 13th SPORE Investigators Workshop in Washington DC, July 9-12, 2005, Dr. Fuqua presented “MAPK Phosphatase-3 Overexpression is associated with tamoxifen resistance”. She also had a poster presentation entitled “Metastasis-Associated Protein-2: A New Target for Hormone-Independent Breast Cancer”. Dr. Fuqua was asked to serve as a Scientific Reviewer on two panels for the 2005 Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), Clinical and Experimental Therapeutics Session July 31-August 2, and Pathobiology August 7-9, both in Reston VA.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., presented "Techniques in Clinical Investigation--Biostatistics in Clinical Trials" and served as a faculty member at the 2005 AACR Course "Science Driving New Therapies in Cancer Medicine: A Special Course for the Community Oncologist Investigator" held July 13-16 in La Jolla, CA. She also presented "Biostatistics for the Clinical Trialist" and served as a course director at the AACR/ASCO Workshop "Methods in Clinical Cancer Research" held in July 30-August 5 in Vail, CO.

RACHEL SCHIFF, Ph.D., was invited to participate in the FASEB Summer Research Conference, Snowmass, Colorado, July 30– August 4, 2005, where she presented an abstract/poster presentation: “An Important Role for AIB1 Phosphorylation by the PI3K/Akt Pathway in the Agonist Activity of Tamoxifen and Breast Cancer Endocrine Resistance.” Dr. Schiff was also invited to visit The Sharet Institute for Oncology at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem on July 18, where she presented “Cross-talk Between Estrogen Receptor and Growth Factor Pathways as a Molecular Target for Overcoming Endocrine Resistance.” Dr. Schiff attended the 13th SPORE Investigators’ Workshop in Washington DC, July 9-12, and gave the poster presentation she presented at FASEB.

CRAIG ALLRED, M.D., attended the 41st ASCO Annual Meeting, Orlando, Florida, where he gave a platform presentation, “The Ductal Carcinoma In Situ Epidemic: Surgery, Radiation, and Medical Therapy,” May 13–15, 2005. He also was invited by Clarient, Inc. to present, “Assessment of ER/PR in Breast Cancer (Invasive & DCIS) by Immunohistochemistry: The Need for Standardization,” at the Continuum Insights and Innovations Conference, Atlanta, Georgia, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, June 14–15, 2005. From June 21–27, he attended the Third International Symposium on The Molecular Biology of Breast Cancer in Molde, Norway, and gave a platform presentation, “Growth Factor Receptor Signalling and Cell Cycle in Breast Cancer Progression.”

BROWN, M.D., Ph.D., presented “Novel Strategies for the Prevention of Breast Cancer” at the Swedish Cancer Conference on Early Detection and Prevention at the Swedish Cancer Conference, on May 5, 2005, in Seattle, WA. He also presented “Cancer Prevention” at the Post ASCO Meeting June 26, 2005, in Dallas, TX.
GARY C. CHAMNESS, Ph.D., participated in a meeting of the University of Colorado Cancer Center External Advisory Board in Denver, May 5-6. He also co-chaired meetings of the Journal of Mammary Gland Biology Editorial Board, of which he is co-editor, at the Mammary Gland Biology Gordon Conference in Newport, RI, June 13 and 15.
ERIC CHANG, Ph.D., presented a poster, “INT6, A potential breast tumor suppressor, and the control of chromosome segregation and proteasome functioning” at the Department of Defense Era of Hope Meeting in Philadelphia PA on June 9, 2005. Dr. Chang also presented his talk “Regulation of Ras signaling selectivity by Ras GEFs and compartmentalization” at the Gordon Research Conference: Mechanisms of Cell Signaling in Hong Kong, China, on June 14, 2005.
JENNY CHANG, M.D., presented “Presurgical approaches to optimizing breast cancer management” at Yale University on June 3, 2005, in New Haven, CT. Dr. Chang also presented “Chemotherapy and biologic advances in metastatic breast cancer” at the Post ASCO Meeting on June 4, 2005, in Greenwich, CT. On June 9, 2005, in Philadelphia PA., Dr. Chang presented “Health disparities and breast cancer” at the Department of Defense Era of Hope meeting. She presented “Beyond anatomic staging: Taking the leap into the molecular era” at the ASCO Breast Oncology Update From Orlando on June 11, 2005, in Houston, TX.
RICHARD ELLEDGE, M.D., was invited to participate as a faculty member for a CME initiative of the University of Alabama entitled “Inside Breast Cancer: The Evolution of Hormone Therapy” on May 7 held in Phoenix AZ. Dr. Elledge also presented a poster at ASCO held in Orlando, FL, May 12-17. The American College of Physicians invited Dr. Elledge to return as the Oncology instructor at the annual Internal Medicine Board Review held in San Antonio TX on June 1-5, 2005.
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., was nominated for a position on the WICR Council for the 2005-2008 Council Term. WICR is a membership group within the American Association for Cancer Research and serves an important role as an advisory body to the AACR Board of Directors in promoting the professional advancement of women in cancer research. Dr. Fuqua was invited to present “ER and Growth Factor Crosstalk” at the Osteoblast Membrane Interaction Group meeting which took place on May 2, 2005, in Houston, TX. She also participated in the 4th Era of Hope Meeting which was held June 8-11, 2005, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA. Her abstract was entitled “Expression of Ezrin-Radixin-Moesin (ERM) binding protein 50 (EBP50) is associated with resistance to tamoxifen”.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., presented a talk, "Early BrCa: when to start an aromatase inhibitor (and is there a continuing role for tamoxifen?)" at the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances and Future Directions in Endocrine Manipulation of Breast Cancer, held June 13-14, 2005, in Cambridge MA. She participated as a reviewer for the NIH Cancer Biomarkers Study Section held on June 23-24 in Washington DC.
ADRIAN LEE, Ph.D., presented his talk “The role of insulin-like growth factor-I in mammary gland development and tumorigenesis” at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, UK, on May 12, 2005. Dr. Lee also participated as a speaker in the 2005 Endocrine Society Meeting held in San Diego, CA, giving a talk, “Insulin-like growth factor-1 regulation of cell proliferation & survival in mammary gland development & tumorigenesis” on June 7, 2005. Dr. Lee attended the Department of Defense Era of Hope Meeting and presented a poster, “Targeted cytoplasmic localization of ER in C4-12 cells reveals novel insight into ligand-stimulated proteasome-mediated degradation of ER but doesn’t show non-genomic signaling” on June 9, 2005, in Philadelphia PA. On June 14, 2005, he presented the talk “Progesterone receptor expression and growth factor signaling” at the Endocrine Manipulation of Breast Cancer―Recent Advances meeting in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Lee also presented the talk “Insulin-like growth factors in breast cancer development and progression” at the 3rd International Molecular Biology of Breast Cancer Symposium in Molde, Norway, on June 24, 2005.
MICHAEL LEWIS, Ph.D.., will serve as an invited editor for an upcoming issue of the Journal of Mammary Gland Biology and Neoplasia covering development processes in the mammary gland. Dr. Lewis was also appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of Mammary Gland Biology and Neoplasia. A representative from Dr. Lewis’ laboratory, Dr. Ricardo Moraes, attended the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Program meeting held in Philadelphia, PA (June 8-11). Dr. Moraes presented a poster entitled “Mammary hyperplasia and accumulation of progenitor cell types in transgenic mice expressing constitutively activated Smoothened”. Dr. Lewis attended the Gordon Research Conference on Mammary Gland Biology held at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI (June 12-17) and presented a poster entitled “Mammary hyperplasia and accumulation of progenitor cell types in transgenic mice expressing constitutively activated Smoothened”. Dr. Lewis was also a contributing author on a second poster from the laboratory of Dr. Yi Li entitled “The cell of origin determines breast cancer phenotype”.
STEFFI OESTERREICH, Ph.D., participated as a speaker in the European Molecular Biology Organization Meeting (EMBO) on May 5, 2005, presenting her talk “Estrogen receptor corepressors in normal mammary gland development and breast tumorigenesis” in Heidelberg, Germany. Dr. Oesterreich also presented her talk, “Estrogen receptor corepressors – Mechanism of action and role in breast tumorigenesis” at the 2005 TraFo Symposium in Heidelberg, Germany, on May 6, 2005. Dr. Oesterreich participated as an invited speaker in the 2005 Endocrine Society Meeting held in San Diego CA, giving a talk, “Novel estrogen receptor corepressors: Mechanism of action & biological significance” on June 6, 2005. Dr. Oesterreich also presented her talk “The scaffold attachment factor SAFB1 – A novel player in breast tumorigenesis” at the 2005 FASEB Summer Research Conference―Nuclear Structure and Cancer, in Saxons River VT on June 27, 2005.
C. KENT OSBORNE, M.D., was invited to present “Targeting the ErbB Receptor Family to Overcome Endocrine Therapy Resistance in Breast Cancer” at the industry-supported ASCO satellite symposium Transforming Breast Cancer Therapy Using Signal Transduction Inhibitors in Orlando, Florida, May 13, 2005. At the ASCO meeting in Orlando, Dr. Osborne presented two cases in the session Dilemmas in the Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer. On May 20, Dr. Osborne was invited to present “SPORE Grant Funding for Translational Research” to the GI SPORE group at UTMB in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Osborne was an invited discussant for the Meet the Professor Breast Cancer Update Working Group in Beverly Hills CA on May 21. He was also invited to participate in the Breast Oncology Update From Orlando held in Houston on June 11, where he presented Dilemmas in the Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer.
RACHEL SCHIFF, Ph.D., was invited to participate in the 8th Annual Komen Mission Conference in Washington DC on June 5-6, where she gave a poster presentation on “Complete disappearance of ER+/HER2+ breast cancer xenografts with the combination of gefitinib, trastuzumab, and pertuzumab to block HER2 cross-talk with ER and restore tamoxifen inhibition.”

CRAIG ALLRED, M.D., attended the 94th Annual USCAP Meeting, San Antonio, Texas, where he gave a platform presentation, “Are Synchronous Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia and Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia (Which Are Common) Genetically Related?”, February 27 – March 1, 2005. He also was invited to the AstraZeneca Arimidex Symposia in Tokyo, Sendai, and Osaka for oncologists /surgeons/pathologists and presented “Evaluation of ER and PR by IHC in Breast Cancer: Standardization and Validation”, March 16-20, 2005. Dr. Allred was an invited speaker to the 29th Annual Meeting of American Society of Breast Disease, Las Vegas, Nevada, presenting “Evaluation of Hormone Receptors by Immunohistochemistry in Breast Cancer”, April 15-16, 2005.
POWEL H. BROWN, M.D., Ph.D., presented “Novel Strategies for the Prevention of Breast Cancer” at the University of Virginia on April 1, 2005, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
GARY C. CHAMNESS, Ph.D., was a visiting professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Aurora CO for two weeks in March and April, teaching “Scientific Writing and Research Grants”.
JENNY CHANG, M.D., presented “Novel Approaches in Management of Breast Cancer“ at the University of Hong Kong Department of Medicine Grand Rounds March 29 in Hong Kong.
RICHARD ELLEDGE, M.D., attended a Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium SPORE meeting in Cambridge, MA, where he presented “Biologic or Mechanism-based Trials.” This meeting was important for defining goals and aims of new treatment trial platforms. Dr. Elledge was also invited to participate in a national oncology advisory council for Pfizer in Phoenix, AZ.
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., served on two study sections, NIH/NCI Oncological Sciences Fellowships and Special Emphasis Panel Review Committee on Biomarkers for Head & Neck and Breast Cancer, in Bethesda, M.D., March 21-23, 2005. Dr. Fuqua served as the Chair of the Tumor Progression Committee for the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) in San Francisco, CA, April 3-4, 2005. Dr. Fuqua was invited to speak at two Merck programs, one on April 6, 2005 in Belmont Hills, PA, and the other on April 7, 2005, in Philadelphia, PA, on “Osteoporotic Fracture: A Call to Action”. On April 12-15, 2005, Dr. Fuqua presented entitled “Cross-talk Between ER and Other Signaling Networks” at The 2nd Annual Pacific Rim Breast and Prostate Cancer Conference in Palm Springs, CA. Dr. Fuqua was also invited to be a speaker at the 13th Annual Radiation Workshop at Round Top, Texas, on April 21-25, 2005 presenting “Crosstalk Between Estrogen Receptor α and Signal Transduction Networks”.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., presented two talks, "Statistical Issues in Early Phase Clinical Trials" and "Biostatistics for Survivors", at the annual American Association for Cancer Research meeting held in Anaheim, California, on April 16-17, 2005.
MAMTA KALIDAS, M.D., was invited to speak at the Greater Houston Area Breast Health Summit. Her presentation was entitled “Breast Health Care in the Harris County Hospital District”. She was also appointed as chair of the NSABP Diversity Strategic Planning Working Group.
ADRIAN LEE, Ph.D., presented his talk, “Role of GH/IGF in Pregnancy-Mediated Protection from Breast Cancer” at the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) – Seminars in Women's Health on March 10, 2005, Houston, TX. He also presented a poster, “Mammary Specific Overexpression of Dominant Active IGF-IR, or its Signaling Intermediates IRS-1 or IRS-2, Results in Mammary Hyperplasia and Tumorigenesis” at the GRC – Insulin-like Growth Factors in Physiology & Disease conference on March 3, 2005, in Ventura, CA. Dr. Lee also participated as a reviewer in the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) Etiology and Prevention Review Committee from April 10-11 in San Francisco, CA.
STEFFI OESTERREICH, Ph.D., participated as a reviewer on the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) Pathogenesis Review Committee from March 19-21 in Oakland, CA. Dr. Oesterreich also attended a meeting in Ann Arbor, MI, with several investigators from various institutions including Johns Hopkins University, Indiana University, The University of Michigan, and Baylor College of Medicine to discuss collaboration for the Pharmacogenetics Research Network & Knowledge Base grant on March 23-24, 2005.
C. KENT OSBORNE, M.D., was invited to participate in the 5th Annual National Steering Committee Meeting of the Redes En Accion: The National Hispanic/Latino Cancer Network in San Antonio, Texas, on March 3, 2005. Dr. Osborne presented “EGFR Inhibitors in Tamoxifen Resistant Breast Cancer” at the OSI Breast Cancer Expert Panel for Tarceva held in Chicago IL on April 1-2, 2005. At the Indiana University Cancer Center Dr. Osborne presented Grand Rounds in Indianapolis IN on April 8, 2005. On April 28-30, he was an invited speaker at the I International Breast Cancer Congress of Moinhos de Vento Hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he presented three different talks on breast cancer. While in Brazil, he also was invited to speak at AstraZeneca’s Workshop for Speakers in Sao Paulo, presenting Faslodex clinical data and a discussion of a recently published article in the JCO “Estrogen-Receptor Biology: Continuing Progress and Therapeutical Implications”.

JENNY CHANG, M.D., presented “Outcome Based Molecular Testing in Breast Cancer” at the University of Florida Symposium Breast and Prostate Pathology: For Pathologists and Clinicians, February 10 -13, 2005, in Amelia Island, Florida.
RICHARD ELLEDGE, M.D., was invited to present “Emerging Data on Targeted Therapies” at Physicians’ Education Resource Current Trends in Breast Cancer: a Post-SABCS Review held in Houston on January 15, 2005. NOCR and Pfizer Oncology asked Dr. Elledge to serve on an Advisory Board meeting for breast cancer management and the role of correlative science in designing new studies and therapies, held in New York February 4-5, 2005. Dr. Elledge was also asked to participate in a development meeting for Aromasin by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Group. The meeting, held in Miami on February 24-25, 2005, was to review the draft lecture kit on Aromasin that is furnished to a speakers’ bureau of breast cancer disease experts.
SUZANNE A.W. FUQUA, Ph.D., was invited to participate in Merck’s Speaker Preparation Program dedicated to speaker preparation around new data from the FOSAMAX Actonel Comparison Trials (FACT) and the science that supports its clinical relevance held in San Francisco, California, January 7-9, 2005. Dr. Fuqua participated in Cancer Center Grand Rounds at the University of Illinois at Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, February 4, 2005, presenting “Estrogen Receptor and Growth Factor Crosstalk: Implications for Breast Cancer Progression.“ She was also invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Best of San Antonio: Breast Cancer – Bench to Bedside program held in Chicago, Illinois, February 5, 2005. The title of her talk was “Translational Basic Science: What’s Exciting?” Dr. Fuqua was an organizer for the 2005 Keystone Symposium on Hormonal Regulation of Tumorigenesis, February 20-25, 2005, in Monterey, California, where she presented “Crosstalk between Estrogen Receptor alpha and Signal Transduction Networks”. She also chaired the plenary session Steroids and Cancer at this symposium. Dr. Fuqua participated in the Annual UAB Breast SPORE External Advisory Committee Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, February 27-28, 2005.
SUSAN G. HILSENBECK, Ph.D., was a Visiting Professor and taught in a course, "Introduction to Clinical Investigation", at the Department of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas, February 8-9, 2005. Dr. Hilsenbeck served as a grant reviewer for the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Grants Selection Committee, held in Alexandria, Virginia, February 10-11, 2005. She served as a reviewer for the Cancer Biomarkers Study Section, held in Washington, DC, February 16-18, 2005. She also participated on a Special Emphasis Panel site visit for the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 22-24, 2005.

He was also invited to speak at the 9th International Conference, Primary Therapy of Early Breast Cancer, January 24-29, 2005 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, presenting “Endocrine Responsiveness: Understanding Receptors”. While in St. Gallen, he also participated by presenting “Putting Clinical Data into Practice: The Case of Aromatase Inhibitors” at the Pfizer Symposium ‘Statistical Methodologies Used in Oncology: Applying Data to the Treatment of Breast Cancer Patients’. Dr. Osborne participated as an invited speaker to The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research 9th Annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium held in Sun Valley, Idaho, February 23-27, 2005.
